Meta launched Muse this month as an AI shopping agent that searches for products, compares options and takes actions on behalf of the user. Amazon blocked it, citing unauthorized access and how it interacted with Amazon’s systems.

At first glance, this looks like a marketplace blocking a bot. I think something much bigger is happening.

Today, when we shop on Amazon, Amazon doesn’t just get the transaction. It gets the entire journey behind it. What we searched for, compared, clicked, ignored, and what finally made us buy. That behavioral data tells Amazon our intent, not just our order. The image below breaks down exactly what Amazon sees in this flow today.

Now put an agent like Muse in between. I tell Muse: “Find me a good laptop under ₹1.2 lakh, preferably HP or Lenovo, with good battery life, and buy it.” Muse becomes the intelligence layer. It understands the requirement, compares across platforms and decides. Amazon may now just receive an API request to purchase a specific product. It still fulfils the order, but it no longer sees the decision journey behind it. That changes the strategic equation completely.

Amazon could gradually shift from being where customers discover and decide, to becoming the infrastructure that fulfils a decision made elsewhere. The valuable layer moves above the marketplace, as the second half of the image shows.

This is why I find the Amazon-Meta situation so interesting. It isn’t just about bots or security. It is about who owns the customer relationship in an agentic commerce world.

Interestingly, Shopify is taking the opposite approach, opening up agentic checkout through Shop Pay. Amazon keeps discovery, transaction and fulfilment together. Shopify lets the agent own the interface while it powers the commerce underneath. Meta wants Muse to own the intelligence layer itself.

The next battle in e-commerce may not be Amazon vs Walmart vs Shopify. It may be about who owns the intelligence layer between the customer and the merchant. Because whoever owns that layer knows not just what you bought, but why you wanted to buy it.
