Product management used to focus on three things: Product, Market, and Pricing—all aimed at getting the right product-market fit. But AI has completely changed this equation.
Now, AI is the fourth cog that product managers must factor in constantly. It’s no longer something the engineering team just “builds in”—PMs now need to think about how AI impacts strategy, operations, and the user experience from day one.
Last week, I spoke about this at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore #SPMIndia2025 Summit, where I conducted a masterclass for a group of product managers. The discussion was all about how AI is reshaping the role of PMs and why they need to adapt fast.
Let us try to understand how the role is different from a traditional product management by using a simple example:
💡 Traditional Product Manager
Imagine you’re building a music streaming app. As a traditional PM, you would:
✅ Define the features (playlists, downloads, recommendations)
✅ Work with the marketing team to understand the audience
✅ Decide on the pricing model (subscription, ads, etc.)
💡 AI Product Manager
Now, if AI is involved, your role changes completely:
✅ You don’t just plan features—you think about how AI will personalize user recommendations
✅ You don’t just segment users—you work with data scientists to analyze patterns and behavior
✅ You don’t just optimize pricing—you consider how AI-driven insights could change the business model
A PM today cannot just hand over requirements to engineers and wait for results. Things are changing so fast in AI that PMs must understand the tech deeply to make the right product decisions.
🔹 You need to speak the language of AI—understand terms like model drift, bias, and hyperparameter tuning
🔹 You need to work closely with data scientists—AI models evolve, and you must know how to adapt your product
🔹 You need to factor AI into every decision—not just at launch but as the product grows
AI has moved product management from execution to orchestration. If you are an AI PM, you are no longer just a builder—you are an orchestrator, balancing product strategy, AI capabilities, and business outcomes.
🚀 The AI Product Manager – Why this role is changing fast!
Great insights, Vignesh! Your breakdown of how AI is reshaping product management is clear and compelling, especially the shift from execution to orchestration—truly a must-read for modern PMs!
