For months, I have been saying that we need a homegrown foundation model—one that is trained on Indian languages and datasets, tailored to our unique needs.

🌟 Now, MeitY is rolling out a proposal to make this happen.

Having a clear AI roadmap is no longer optional for any country. As AI gets deeply integrated into businesses, governance, and daily life, relying solely on foreign models comes with risks—whether it’s data security, bias, cultural nuances or limited support for Indic languages.

💠 Building an Indian foundational model will unlock immense opportunities—not just for researchers and startups, but also for enterprises looking to develop AI agents, industry-specific models, and Indic-language applications.

This is just the first step in the long journey ahead. The next big challenges that we need address are to ensure that we have the compute power, funding and the collaboration needed to execute a vision of this scale.
