Almost everyone who turns up for our Financial Independence mentoring session asks this question.
And the simple answer is:ย “๐๐จ๐ฎ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ญ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฃ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ง ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐๐ก ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐.”

Doย notย put pressure on yourself to land this number if you don’t know your expenses.
๐กย ๐๐%ย (and Iโm not exaggerating) of our mentees didn’t know their yearly expenses. Itโs usually just a hypothetical number!
Even Ranjani Mani and I made this mistake during our early years of planning. We used estimated numbers to work out our corpus, but over time we realized those numbers werenโt adding up.
We tried all sorts of fancy apps that read our SMS and categorized our expenses, but finally, we went back to the simplest way of bookkeepingโ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐๐.
๐ Every day, we capture all our expensesโwhether through credit card, UPI, or cashโin this sheet. To streamline family expenses, we created a simpleย ๐พ๐๐๐๐๐จ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ย where anyone who spends drops a note with the amount and a brief description.
๐ And what a world of change it made! We were astonished to find that we had been underestimating our expenses byย 15-20%ย every year.
This simple exercise also gave us the opportunity to reflect on areas where we were overspending and explore ways to optimize them. Weโre so used to it now that even a small spend of โน20 goes into the sheet.
๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฏ๐ข๐๐:
Start with this simple exercise. Do it forย 6 ๐๐๐๐๐๐ย and youโll start getting a clearer picture of your spending. If you do it consistently, like us, for yearsโyou’ll gain confidence in your spending patterns and know exactly what you need.
Remember:ย ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐
๐๐๐ ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ, so invest the time to figure out the right one for your family.
Trust me, this exercise wonโt even take 10 minutes a day. โณ
